About Nankai University's College of Chemistry

Nankai University's College of Chemistry boasts a long history and profound academic heritage. Established alongside the founding of Nankai University in 1919, the Department of Chemistry was formally set up in 1921 under the leadership of Mr. Qiu Zongyue, making it one of the earliest chemistry departments among Chinese universities. The renowned educator Zhang Boling served as Nankai University's founding president, while the distinguished chemist Yang Shixian played a pivotal role in advancing Nankai's chemical programs for many years. As one of the founders of modern chemistry in China, he pioneered research in agrochemicals and organoelement chemistry, and established the country's first dedicated chemical research institute—the Institute of Organoelement Chemistry.

Over the past century, Nankai Chemistry has consistently maintained a leading position domestically and achieved world-class standing internationally. Its chemistry discipline has been selected as a “Double First-Class” construction program and is rated as an A+ discipline. In the 2025 QS China Best Disciplines Ranking, Nankai University's chemistry program ranked second nationwide. By the end of 2025, the discipline successfully entered the ESI global top 0.01%, ranking ninth globally—signifying its ascent to the pinnacle of international excellence. In the same year, Nankai Chemistry published over 250 papers in top-tier international journals such as Nature, JACS, and Angewandte Chemie, ranking third among global universities in both the quality and quantity of its publications.
